RLSS - UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) 8th edition

About the course

The NPLQ is a Regulated Qualification by Ofqual and is awarded through IQL.

It is also an internationally recognised Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) UK qualification, enabling you to apply for a job as a lifeguard.

Due to the nature of the roles of a lifeguard, the course is physically demanding and includes swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the pool.

Duration

The course is usually run over 5 days from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday with an independent assessment on Friday afternoon at about 3pm. The course includes use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

 

Content

Section 1: The Lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool Supervision

Section 2: Intervention and Recue, Emergency Action Plan

Section 3: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), AED and First Aid.

Training and Assessment is in all 3 sections and these must be successfully passed to gain the qualification.

 

Pre-requisites:

Every candidate, prior to commencement of training for the NPLQ must:

- Be 16 years of age at the time of taking the NPLQ assessment;
- Demonstrate that you are fit and healthy
- Jump / dive into deep water
- Swim 50m in under 1 minute
- Swim 100m continuously on the front, then on the back
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder / steps and where the pool design permits
