First Aid


Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

This qualification has been specifically designed to meet the criteria set by the Department for Education’s EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) requirements which state that all Early Years providers in England have to have at least one person who has a current and full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises, and available at all times, when children are present.

How long is the course?

This qualification contains 2 mandatory units and is 12 contact hours.

What is the maximum number of learners allowed on one course?

There is a maximum number of 12 learners allowed on one course

Can anyone attend?

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the training.

How is the course assessed?

- Theory assessment/multiple choice question papers: 1 x 15 question paper (minimum score 11) and 1 x 25 question paper (minimum score 18)
- Practical assessment – 7 completed throughout the course:
- - Infant CPR and safe use of AED
- - Child CPR and safe use of AED
- - Choking
- - Paediatric wounds, bleeding and shock
- - Unconscious casualty
- - Management of Paediatric fractures
- - Management of anaphylaxis

Requalification

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years. Requalification is to attend and successfully complete the same course before the date of expiry.

Learning Outcomes

Unit 1

- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Paediatric First Aider
- Be able to assess an Emergency Situation safely
- Be able to provide first aid to an infant and child who is unresponsive
- Be able to provide first aid to an infant and child who is choking
- Be able to provide first aid to an infant and child with external bleeding
- Be able to provide first aid to an infant and child who is suffering from shock
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with bites, stings and minor injuries.

Unit 2

- Be able to administer first aid to an infant and child with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
- Be able to administer first aid to an infant and child with suspected head and spinal injuries
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with an acute medical condition or sudden illness
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child who is experiencing the effects of extremes of body temperature
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child who has sustained an electric shock
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with burns or scalds
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with suspected poisoning
- Know how to administer first aid to an infant and child with anaphylaxis
