RLSS UK - National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC)

Developed and enhanced from the highly successful Rescue Test for Teachers and Coaches of Swimming.

Who is the course suitable for?

This supervision and rescue qualification is suitable for teachers working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities, such as a swimming lesson. It is suitable for a wide range of swimming pool designs and water depths and is designed to equip teachers with adequate skills to minimise risk and to respond effectively to an emergency.

This is not a recognised lifeguard qualification and is unsuitable for supervising unprogrammed casual swimming.

Pre-requisites:

To enter onto a course candidate a must be 16 or older at the time of the assessment and be able to:   
- swim 50 metres
- surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
- climb out without help and without using steps or ladder.

Course structure:

The course is divided into 3 sections:

Section 1:  The Teacher, Swimming pool and Class Management
Section 2:  Intervention, Rescue and Emergency action Plan
Section 3:  Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid

What is the maximum number of candidates allowed on one course?

There is a recommended maximum of 12 candidates per course.

How are the students assessed?

There is an assessment carried out on the final day by an independent assessor. Candidates must have completed at least the minimum training hours for the course.

How long is the course?

- Teachers with no previous experience of lifesaving or Life Support skills – minimum 14 hours plus assessment
- Teachers with some previous experience – minimum 6 hours
- Teachers renewing the award – minimum 4 hours

For renewal candidates:
2 hours per section i.e. 6 hours plus 2 hour assessment = 8 hours

There should be no more than 8 contact hours per day.

If teachers can provide suitable and sufficient ongoing training and competency records, these may be used instead of attending a renewal course.

Options:

The level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work may be taken as part of the course. For new candidates there are no additional hours. For renewal candidates the course will increase by 4 hours.
